The Phytolaccaceae Family was named and described by Robert Brown in Narrative of an Expedition to Explore the River Zaire in 1818.

Plants of the World Online lists 5 genera in the family with a total of 34 accepted species (as of 4-10-20 when I’m updating this page). Those numbers could change as updates are made.

The genus Phytolacca includes 25 species but P. americana is the only one I am familiar with… It is the most abundant species in the family and is found in many countries. The family was named after this genus and is commonly known as the Pokeweed family.
