The plant family Phytolaccaceae was named and described by Robert Brown in Narrative of an Expedition to Explore the River Zaire in 1818.

As of 4-21-21 when I last updated this page, Plants of the World Online lists 5 genera in the family with a total of 34 accepted species. Genera include Agdestis (1 species), Anisomeria (4 species), Ercilla (2 species), Nowickea (2 species), and Phytolacca (25 species). Those numbers could change as updates are made.

Phytolacca americana is the only species in the family I am familiar with… It is the most abundant species in the family and is found in many countries. The family was named after this genus and is commonly known as the Pokeweed family.
