The plant family Cycadaceae was named and described by Christiaan Hendrik Persoon in Synopsis Plantarum in 1807.
The Cycas genus is the only genus in the Cycadaceae Family. Plants of the World Online lists 116 accepted species. The 2013 version of The Plant List (no longer maintained) named 92 accepted species and 1 infraspecific name.
