The family Papaveraceae was named and described by Antoine Laurent de Jussieu in Genera Plantarum in 1789.
Plants of the World Online lists 40 accepted genera in this family commonly referred to as the poppy family. The is a family mostly of herbaceous plants (annuals, biennials, and perennials) but also includes a few trees and shrubs.
The Wikipedia talks about and lists subfamilies, tribes, and subtribes. The article lists several genera/species not listed in the family in Plants of the World Online, but some are accepted species. It’s complicated… Plus, Plants of the World Online is still uploading data and the APG group is probably not finished reclassifying the genera/species in this family. Time will tell. Like I said, it’s complicated, and above my head.
