Orobanchaceae Family:

Castilleja coccinea (Indian Paintbrush/Painted-Cup Paintbrush) on 5-5-25, #1041-14.

Orobanchaceae Vent.

Orobanchaceae Vent. is the accepted scientific name for this family of flowering plants. It was named and described as such by Étienne Pierre Ventenat in Tableau du Règne Végétal in 1977.

The plant family Orobanchaceae is also known as the Broomrape family. It is made up of mostly parasitic and hemiparasitic species. They consist of annuals, perennials, and shrubs.

As of 12-28-25 when this page was updated, Plants of the World Online lists 99 genera in the plant family Orobanchaceae. That number could change as updates are made on POWO.

While I was briefly acquainted with one parasitic species on the farm, I only recently met a few hemiparasitic plants white visiting a fairly local well-maintained native prairie on 5-5-25. So far, I have met two species in this family. Click on the plants name below to go to their own page. There are several other photos on each page. Hopefully there will be more to come.

Castilleja coccinea (Indian Paintbrush/Painted-Cup Paintbrush) on 5-5-25, #1041-14.

I have often seen a few Castilleja coccinea (Indian Paintbrush, Painted-Cup Paintbrush, Etc.) in a particular area along 52 Highway close to the 65 junction. I always wanted to stop and take photos for ID, but there was no place to pull over. I was so impressed with the prairie and the diversity there and the amount of Indian Paintbrush.

Pedicularis canadensis (Wood Betony, Canadian Lousewort, Etc.) on 5-5-25, #1041-28.

Pedicularis canadensis (Wood Betony, ETC.) was the other member of this family I found in the private prairie. I had never seen it before and the flowers made me smile. There were A LOT of these, too.
