Salvia nemorosa L. is the accepted name for this species of Salvia. It was described by Carl von Linnaeus in the second edition of Species Plantarum in 1762.
The genus, Salvia L., was named and described as such by Carl von Linnaeus in the first volume of the first edition of Species Plantarum in 1753.
As of 12-20-23 when this page was last updated, Plants of the World Online lists 1,018 species in the Salvia genus. It is a member of the plant family Lamiaceae with 232 genera. Those numbers could change as updates are made on POWO.
The New Dimensions Salvia series was developed by Kieft Pro Seeds of Holland.

I bought these two Salvia nemorosa cultivars from Lowe’s on April 23, 2017. They were developed by Kieft Pro Seeds of Holland and are supposed to have the richest, deepest color of any seed-grown Salvia.

USEFUL INFORMATION:
Family: Lamiaceae.
Origin: Species native to Europe and west-central Asia.
Zones: USDA Zones 5a-8b (-20° F).
Size: 12” tall x 18” wide.
Light: Prefers full sun.
Soil: Average, well-drained.
Water: Drought tolerant but prefers moist soil
Notes: Deadhead for repeat bloom. Flowers best when watered regularly. Many need to trim back if plants become floppy. Cut plants back after flowering.

I had decided to re-dig the south bed and amended it with “The Good Stuff” (decomposed cow manure and hay) so I needed new plants. I put both these plants on the right side where they would get full sun.

Although Salvia does very well in average, well-drained soil, they prefer moist, sandy to gravelly soil.

They are drought tolerant to a point but do much better with regular watering. They also produce more flowers in moist soil.

As with most plants, they need occasional deadheading for continual flower production and to keep the plants looking neat and tidy.

The Salvia nemorosa ‘New Dimensions Blue’ was one of the first perennials to return in the spring of 2018. Even before Salvia x sylvestris ‘Mainacht’ which was always first. The ‘New Dimensions Rose’ did not survive the winter.

The Salvia nemorosa ‘New Dimensions Blue’ has proven to be a great performer. It has survived two winters (one which was VERY COLD) and emerged early. It has had no problems with the intense sun in the south bed and has endured fairly dry conditions when I didn’t have time to water. So, I would give it a Belmont Rooster FIVE GOLD STAR rating.
This was a great cultivar but it finally fizzled out…

Thanks for posting this useful series about Salvia nemorosa ‘New Dimensions Blue’. I got ahold of some very healthy bargain plants last summer and planted them and now waiting for them to properly reappear. I’m in Ayrshire, Scotland so winters here are more cold and wet than severe cold and snowy/frosty for weeks on end. I came across your blog whilst searching as I was doing some digging in the area where I may have planted the Salvia n. NDB but seem to have dug up some ‘sticks’ with bladdery-type roots on them. So I am curious about the roots of your plants. In the meantime, I have planted the ‘bladder’ roots in pots to see what comes up. I know the leaf of the Salvia so I’ll be delighted to have them back!!!

Hello Shauna! Proper drainage is very important for Salvia during cold and wet winters. Mine overwinter OK on the south side of the house but not on the north side. My Salvia nemorosa ‘New Dimension’s Blue’ started having difficulty last summer and barely returned this spring. I have to keep an eye on them… I hope yours return for you. Thanks for the comment!
