The Bignoniaceae Family was named and described by Antoine Laurent de Jussieu in Genera Plantarum in 1789.
Plants of the World Online list 80 accepted genera in this family of mostly trees, vines and subshrubs, etc. The 2013 version of The Plant List (no longer maintained) gives 86 accepted genera plus 26 unresolved genera. The family, at that time, included 3,630 species.
