Hello everyone! I hope this post finds you well. I got up this morning and went to make my morning coffee as always. I looked out the window over the sink and saw this! I thought… Well, I was so shocked I don’t even remember what my first thought was. Maybe I was blank. Maybe I thought I was still not awake and I was having a nightmare. Maybe I went back to bed to try to wake up. But no, I was awake. Wide awake… It was really happening…
I don’t ever remember it “S’ing” this early here in my life. Not that “S” is a memorable thing, but one this early… It did “S” here on Thanksgiving in 2007, though. I don’t really know much about what happened from 1987-2013 because I wasn’t here. I have seen a few flakes early but you couldn’t really tell if it was “you know what”. It would be like one every 30 seconds to a minute. But not in October. Well, it is almost November, but still… I am never ready for winter anyway.
I went to feed the cats on the back porch and it was snowing there, too. Only two cats were present… The thermometer on the wall said 30° F. It wasn’t snowing that much, just a steady flurry. It had rained off and on during the night, but I certainly wasn’t expecting this. I hadn’t looked at the weather forecast for a few days but maybe I should have.
I opened the front door and there was “S” there, too!
The leaves are still on the trees… Jade normally wants to go outside but she was not even coming to the door…
We only had a light “F” on October 15, which is normal, so I hadn’t even cut down the Cannas or dug the Colocasia rhizomes…
The grass is still green, there are green leaves on a lot of the trees and shrubs. The Buick is normally in the garage but I have been cleaning it up and working on making it more organized. I had bought a new shelf to clean up the corner by the door. I wanted to put stuff on the shelf like gas cans, sprayers, etc. that have always been on the floor. That project was started on October 1, but a missing part delayed the whole operation…
The Alocasia watch on with discouragement. They were hoping for warmer temps so they could go back outside for a few days more. Their spot in the basement is ready but they really don’t want to go down there yet. The coffee table in the living room is also full of plants…
The cactus in front of the sliding door are not too happy about it “S’ing” so soon either. But they are glad they are inside instead of out in it.
I had plans today to finish the new shelf in the garage and start working on the new plant shelves. GEEZ!!! The part for the shelf in the garage finally arrived. I had called the company about the missing part and the lady said I would get it in 5-7 days. Well, it didn’t come. SO, I got on the company website and sent them an email. The next day I had a reply and I was once again told the part would arrive in 5-7 days. It was shipped promptly and they sent a tracking number. This time, it did arrive. Apparently, the person I talked to over the phone screwed up somewhere and the part didn’t get ordered.
I have been working on the Fall 2020 updates and am almost finished with #3. It will probably be finished today despite the interruption…
The extended forecast says it will be 54° F on Friday and 61 on Saturday and sunny…
How is the weather in your neck of the woods? As I am finishing this post, it is still “S’ing” a little. At least for the moment…

Hello Linda! GEEZ! My son called this morning from Grand Junction, Colorado and he said it “S’ed” there, too. My daughter is Utah and it didn’t “S” where she is. There is still too much to do outside for it to get cold. 🙂 Stay warm, take care, and thanks for the comment!

Corn harvest is now at a halt for us. But warmth is coming so next week we start again. 🙂

Glad to hear your harvest is finished. I think most of the corn is in here but not the soybeans. Ummm… What are you starting again next week?

As long as the snow is light and the temp is around freezing, you should be able to just treat the snow as a freeze.

Hello Julia! It kept up with a mixture of snow and rain all day then it froze. Funny to see flowers blooming wrapped in ice. Take care and thanks for the comment!

Ugh! Ice storms are the worst. I remember when I lived in the South, the branches would break under the ice and it would sound like gunshots.

We really didn’t have an ice storm. But you are right, they are very bad. The worse one I was in was 2007 when I lived in southern Missouri.

Even by Maine standards that is early for s#&@. I have read the white stuff might be coming our way. Here’s hoping it won’t be around for too long so that we can finish with fall cleanup.

Our ecosystem depends on snow, for the aquifers. Also, even without snow, it gets very cold in Maine, and the perennials really suffer without the insulation of snow. One year, I lost most of my plants in my back bed because there was so little snow. That hasn’t happened recently.

Oh, yeah… Very true. “S” is a good thing in many ways. I suppose I don’t mind it as much as the severe cold, especially without the stuff. Like you, I have certainly lost several perennials without it over the years.

We got lots of ice here and were without power three days. I’m thankful we had a generator! Now there will be months of tree limb cleanup. The trees still had leaves on them, thus so much damage. I don’t think we’ve had a storm with this much damage since I moved here thirty years ago.

Hello Laura! Sorry to hear about the ice storm and everything that goes with it. I didn’t see that much ice on the trees where I live but it seemed there was more in town. There are still a lot of green leaves on our trees. Weird, we had the “F” on the 15th and the Colocasia got zapped then it warmed up. Then the ice and snow melted yesterday to reveal new growth… Weather is sometimes a friend and sometimes a foe… I am very glad you have a generator. I hope you are OK despite the mess. I noticed that it ‘S’ed in Oklahoma as well. I do not have much experience with it, but while I was in Oklahoma years ago, found it to be cold, wet and messy. Although it is intriguing from a distance, it is obvious why those who contend with it dislike it.

Hello Tony! I only like it as it is falling during the night and if it is gone by the time I get up. If we get a big snow it can be a pain to get around in feeding the cows. Then when it melts it is a muddy mess. Unlike rain, it is very quiet… I always like seeing snow-covered mountains, which we don’t have, of course. 🙂 Take care and thanks for the comment!

I’d be at a loss for words, too.
We do occasionally get snow in the spring and then it is a bit odd to see daffodils poking through the white stuff.
Thinking about it, we did get a really big bout of snow about this time 10 years ago. I remember precisely because my car had a little mishap which had me with four year old daughter trudging through the snow to collect the car from the dealership where I’d bought it.
Anyway, that’s another story. The point is that I can’t remember if the trees were in leaf. I didn’t have any of my own then but since three of the deciduous are still in leaf now (as you saw on my post), I’m even more surprised that it snowed that November 2010.
Are there still leaves on your trees now? The red leaves look really beautiful.

Hello Helen! There are still a few trees with leaves, but many have fallen. We have had cold temps followed by warmer temps which keeps some of them guessing. Many usually fall off anyway because decreasing day length triggers dormancy. We nearly always have an “F” by the middle of October but early snows are uncommon. That would be better than an early “F” though. Still, cold temperatures are not welcome. 🙂 Take care always and thanks for the comment!

Yes, snow is better than frost. I haven’t experienced one in my garden this year yet, so the nasturtiums are still going strong.

Lucky you! Now the conversation is moving from snow to a more pleasant experience. Nasturtiums! I grew them many years ago then again in Mississippi. I was hoping they would do as well as they did when I lived in Minnesota. I never grew any that grew so large as when I lived there.

Was there plenty of rain in Minnesota? I think mine have done so well this year because of it being so wet.

I had to water often. I am not sure why they did so well there. I know it was very cold during the winter and very hot during the summer. LOTS of “S” during the winter. I can’t believe I lived there for a year!

Doesn’t sound the best of climates. No idea why they should have done so well but nice to have them while you could.
